Michael Franti Concert

Dear Internetz,
Tonight was tremendously fun.  Michael Franti was awesome (I slapped him on the back as he walked by), and I had a great time.  However, I don't know how much more 'one love-ness' I can handle.  Furthermore, there's nothing like glaring homosexuality, a whole lot of illicit drugs, and thousands of hippies in bad need of a bath to reinforce the Republican values that my dear parents have instilled in since my birth.  I shan't complain too much more because it really was an excellent concert, but I would like to conclude by saying that older women (40+) should not be allowed to act like skanks.  I mean seriously, no one really wants your old ass anywhere near them.  STOP IT!  Hmmm, there probably isn't anything else to say.

Sincerely,
Mr. Andrew "Nwanda" Bridges

Editing With Your Phone

There is a new article up on the Video Editing Tutorial blog about alternative film editing software for your iPhone.

I have had the new iPhone 4 since early July of this year, and I love to use it to shoot pictures and a little bit of impromptu video. However, I never really got into any editing with the phone because I was unimpressed by the iMovie film editing software.

Apple to Extend iTunes Song Previews to 90 Seconds in U.S.

Is anyone else happy about this?

"According to Symphonic Distribution, Apple has informed music labels that it is preparing to extend the length of iTunes Store song previews in the United States to 90 seconds for songs that are at least 2 minutes and 30 seconds long."

Election Day Comes to A Close #Election

It's nearly 10:00 on election day, and we know that Hickenlooper won, but the verdict is still out on the Senate race between Bennet and Buck. Of course I hope to see a Republican victory :-) It looks like we're going to take the House, which is definitely a good thing. I promise! Anyway, we'll have to see what tomorrow brings.

They Said it Couldn't Be Done

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done,
    But, he with a chuckle replied
That "maybe it couldn’t," but he would be one
    Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
    On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
    That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you’ll never do that;
    At least no one has done it";
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
    And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
    Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
    That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
    There are thousands to prophesy failure;
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
    The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle it in with a bit of a grin,
    Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start to sing as you tackle the thing
    That "couldn’t be done," and you’ll do it.

Stop-Motion Genius

This is a sort of hybrid between a regular video and a stop-motion.  It is very well-done, and I can tell a lot of time and effort was put into it.  It definitely warrants a watch and a thumbs up

Long Way Down: The Art of the Documentary

Being the diligent fellow that I am, I spent all yesterday watching the series Long Way Round,  which follows Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman in their journey around the world beginning in London and ending in New York.  Today I'll probably spend most of my time watching Long War Down, which is the same idea, but they go from Scotland to Cape Town.

Anyway, I just think this is interesting because it gives an idea of how a documentary can be made with very little hassle.  It inspires me to do something similar.  I really like the series and I'm sure you will too.

Editing for Effect: BlackboxTV

The new YouTube channel BlackboxTV does an excellent job of editing for effect.  It is a channel for scary, X-Files like stuff with a number of popular YouTubers like sxephil and iJustine taking lead roles.  Anyway, I found this interesting, and I think you will as well.

iPad and iTV: The Dream Team

Rumors of Apple releasing the iTV in the near future are at an all time high, with many calling it another "game changer."  Anyway, I was interested to read this blurb from the kevinrose blogg.

The iPad will turn into one big badass remote control: The iPad will be the preferred input device for the iTV. You'll be able to editing videos, control games, and extend the interactive television experience. Imagine watching monday night football on the TV while viewing/exploring other camera angles on the iPad.

Can you imagine having the capability to edit TV as you watch it???  Good Lord, this might be a sign of the apocalypse.

Motion: 4 Point Tracking Demo

This is just a short test to see what I could do with 4-point tracking in Apple's Motion. I simply tracked my school picture from last year to the page of a notebook using the 4 dots that I put on the page. I think the results are pretty good considering I spent about ten minutes on it. If you are interested in a tutorial, just leave a comment, and if there's enough interest, I'll make one.

Export Settings from Final Cut for Vimeo

Surely, many of you have been in the situation where you are unsure as to the perfect export settings to use when uploading your work to a website like YouTube or Vimeo.  These guidelines are from Vimeo.

The problem – the export using HD footage from Final Cut Expresse produced an .mov file with lines throughout or interlaced video.

The solution – recommended by WendyCity Productions here on the vimeo website:

Go to File/Export/Using QuickTime Conversion. Click the “Options” button (next to the Format drop-down window), click the Size button, then check the “Deinterlace Source Video” box at the bottom.

Take a look at the whole article here: http://storydoulatechno.wordpress.com

Why No One Will Watch Your Home Videos

I realize this is really old, but I thought it was kind of funny in the way that everyone who has made home videos has probably felt the same way.

3. No documentaries please. We play reporter with the video camera, capturing every blow, every turn our marathoner makes, every step up Heartbreak Hill (Boston Marathon), all the way until he disappears into the shower stall. Is this video for the archives or for entertainment?

As always, be sure to check out the Video Editing Tutorial blog for cool junk.

The Forums Have Spoken

"Having worked with Avid Media Composer a bit (the full blown professional Avid system), I like FCP's interface much better, but there are areas in which Avid is much more powerful. Premiere is not a bad editor at all, and was/is my choice for a Windows based NLE. That said, FCP has steadily been taking over professional market share for a reason. It actually competes well with Avid's pro systems, but it's priced VERY affordably."

AppleShakeGuru: Where I Go for Inspiration

For anyone just starting out in the Final Cut suite, using Shake, or other Mac editing programs, AppleShakeGuru's videos are the best video editing tutorials that I can find.  He knows his way inside and out of all the professional editing software.  But more importantly, he is a good teacher.  I have learned more from this guy for free than I would ever care to read out of an expensive textbook.  Check out his YouTube page, and be sure to watch the Video Editing Tutorial blog for more updates.

iMovie or Final Cut Express

I have been using Final Cut Express for nearly a year, mostly because I never knew that iMovie contained almost all of the features that I really wanted.  I learned to use Final Cut pretty quickly thanks to a number of Video Editing Tutorials.  I can honestly say that I still have no idea as to the complete capability of iMovie.  The interface seems absolutely ridiculous compared to Final Cut.  I never know where to find what I'm looking for.

Moving up from iMovie to Final Cut Express isn’t an easy decision—Final Cut Express costs $200, while iMovie is free with every new Mac, or $79 as part of iLife. So is it worth it? If your video editing consists of nothing more than the occasional edit of a 45-second clip recorded on your digital camera, then probably not.
But if you work on longer projects, or want access to a wider array of features (including third-party plug-ins), then Final Cut Express is well worth the investment. It may not be free, but the timesaving interface makes it money well spent in my book.

Video Editing Tutorial: Vlogging on YouTube

In this video editing tutorial, you will learn the basics of vlogging on YouTube.  We will cover what to say, editing the video, and publishing it to YouTube.

What to Say
The first thing that you must comprehend when deciding to start a vlog is what to say.  Sure, everyone makes it look so easy, talking about their lives on YouTube, but to be successful, you have to have something worth telling people about.  You can't get in front of the video camera multiple times a week to tell everyone that nothing has happened.  For this reason, I would recommend planning what you are going to say for the first couple videos.  This way, you will ensure that your not wasting your time or other people's time.  Once you have made a few vlogs, you will be able to talk on the spot to the camera.  You will no longer have any stage fright.  Most importantly, you will have trained yourself how to vlog.

Editing Your Vlog
Editing a vlog is not hard at all.  Anyone can do it in any video editing program available.  When editing your vlog, you should add any intro or outro that you may have.  also, it is very important, at least for the first few episodes, that you edit out any um's or uh's, or even long pauses.  This will make you look more intelligent, and it will keep the viewer interested.  Finally, I would recommend exporting your video in 720p if you have the option or know how.

Publishing Your Vlog to YouTube
I am assuming that you have a YouTube account.  If not, create one.  Once you have an account, you just need to upload the video, add a title, a description, and choose a thumbnail.  I will not go over how to upload the video, but I will offer some advice on choosing a title.  Do not simply use the date or the word "vlog" as your title.  You should give you vlog a name.  Philip DeFranco calls his the Vloggity for example.  Once you have a name for your vlog, rather than just using the date, you should give it a creative title that has to do with the content of that installment of your vlog.  It is also important that you do not neglect the description box.  You should prepare a generic description that you can use with all of your vlogs.  It should include a brief description of you vlog with links to things like you channel, your Twitter, and any other place that you can think of.

Hopefully this video editing tutorial has been both helpful and insightful.  It should definitely improve your chances of developing a following on YouTube.
